This morning on NPR; I am not sure what the story was about...I wasn't really paying attention, they were talking about some very small town and the need for a new road. The quote that struck me was some hayseed guy saying (in a hayseed accent) " A nice new road means more people using it, more people means more business......."
And then it struck me. The cycle of politics, the cycle of life. And if I was to complete this hayseed's thoughts and comment's to full circle he would have gone on to say
"... more business means more income, more income means more wealth, more wealth means more taxes, more taxes means more Republicans, more Republicans mean less taxes, less taxes means the road turns to shit and we go back to our miserable lives like we find ourselves now"

I think most conservatives believe that taxes for things like roads, police, fire departments, and national defense are important. It's things like welfare, food stamps, medicaid, unemployment, abortion clinics, methadone clinics, and the like that create issues. Most of these programs in effect have no end, people can live on them cradle to grave.
The expansion of government into intimate facets of people's live creates dependency on those programs. Thus the motive is not to "help people," but to create indentured servants that will continuously vote your party into office. The "progressive" or "liberal" intent is control, and when it's secured the outcome is more government involvement and control.
